Explore how Queens Farm positively impacts our current food system PLANNING YOUR VISITQueens Farm offers seasonal programming for school groups from October - June. We offer a morning program for camp groups June - August. Please call, email or complete a trip request. Trip request (select REQUEST A SCHOOL VISIT)Program hours: 1. Payment: You will be issued an invoice upon making a reservation. Full payment is due three weeks before your trip. If payment is not received by the due date indicated on your invoice, your trip is considered canceled. Registration minimums: All guided programs are offered for a minimum of 2. You may reserve a program for fewer people, but you are obligated to pay the fee for 2. Registration maximums: Once you make a reservation, the number of spaces you reserve represents students and parents and is the maximum number of people you can bring for your trip. Chaperones: Parent chaperones are charged admission and we recommend 2- 3 parents per class. For summer programs, we charge per person including staff and offer one free admission for every 2. Hayrides: Hayrides are included in several programs (Seed to Pumpkin, Farmyard in Fall, and Animal Adventures). Hayrides can be added to fall and spring programs for an additional $1/person. Students learn about what crops we are growing, how we integrate livestock into our practices, and how we recycle food scraps! Students are introduced to the life cycle of the pumpkin from seed to plant. They will also explore plant seasonality, pollination, and uses of pumpkins both historically and today. Students learn about this significant and popular fruit through discussing the seasonality of apple orchards and the pollination process. They are introduced to colonial history and food preservation with our apple cider presses, and take part in cider- making. Each student brings home a small bottle of pasteurized cider. This program includes a guided tour of our working farm and historic orchard. FEE: $8 per person Compost Explorers (2nd - 1. The powerful ecological value of compost comes to life in this hands- on workshop. Through a series of exploratory activities, students engage with our compost exhibit and demonstration site to learn the basic science of compost. Farm educators teach how we make and use compost at Queens Farm and why it’s important to divert food waste from landfills. March 3. 1)Registration begins Tuesday, September 6th, 2. Fabrics from the Farm (K - 5th grade)Where does fiber come from? At Queens Farm, we raise sheep and alpaca, both of which provide us with warm woolens used to make beautiful yarns. Students learn about raising livestock for value- added products, and how sheep’s wool was turned into fiber during colonial times. Age- appropriate demonstrations and hands- on activities teach the process of turning natural fibers into fabric. Visits to our sheep and alpaca are included, weather permitting. FEE: $8 per person Quilting: History, Culture, Math & More! Through examination of quilts throughout time and from around the world, students learn why quilts were important in colonial times and how they can be used to tell stories, represent cultures, and contain elements of design and geometry. Each student designs their own quilt square which can be constructed into a finished quilt for display in the classroom. FEE: $8 per person Colonial Kids: In the Farmhouse Kitchen (4th - 8th grade)What was life like for a New York City Dutch farming family in 1. Inside of our 1. 8th century kitchen, students learn about food preparation, food preservation and chores of the colonial child. They assist with preparing vegetable soup, cornbread, and freshly churned butter. Students take a brief outdoor tour while their soup and bread are cooked and return indoors to enjoy the flavors of colonial recipes around the fire. Fee: $9 per person. FEE: $8 per person From the Ground Up (2nd - 8th Grade)What does a plant need to grow? This program explores plant parts, photosynthesis, and the plant growth cycle. Students learn how our farmers utilize greenhouses and cold frames for plant propagation and season extension. Students will start seeds to bring back to the classroom. K - 3rd Grade)What types of animals live at Queens Farm? Students will learn more about the livestock we raise and how each animal benefits the farm. Through an indoor presentation students will be introduced to the life and behavior of honeybees and learn how bees pollinate many of crops we eat every day. Students learn about added- value products through a candle- making activity and taking home an edible honey stick.
